Tried the SPB shell on my N8 and it is wonderful. The only gripe I had with n8 was that beyond the homescreens which are very useful, the menu and other parts of the OS were not quite user friendly and easily reachable. With SPB I can configure what I want to access easily and the 15 homescreens are super awesome. The carousel shows off the graphics capabilities of n8 beautifully. The things I like

    1. 15 homescreens
    2. The look and feel (moving wallpaper etc)
    3. Transparency

What I would love to see.

    1. wallpaper in all homescreens
    2. More customization options.

Other than these two, SPB shell is just about perfect in my book.

Simply put, why doesn’t Nokia just buy this awesome thing to replace the current home screen, menu, contacts and other basic apps? Better performance, better usability, better look. There’s no valid reason to go with the old stuff which I think carries too much weight of history beginning from the first S60 phones that came out some ten years ago. Personally I’d prefer a bit less glossy look&feel than SPB provides. Maybe this could be configurable.

when i tried the trial version of spb mobile shell on my n97 mini, it becomes much smoother. great transition effects, eye candy looking, and more sensitive to touch compared with the usual s60 5th edition UI/menu.

what i like the most are the 7 home screen panes and the two layouts to choose from (lifestyle and professional). in addition to that, the 3d carousel looks really awsome!

On the other hand, because of so much customization, it becomes very confusing for starters like me. but after a while that i get used to it, im very satisfied with it’s user-friendliness. i can do all the customization that i want now.

to wrap it up, i should say that after experiencing the spb mobile shell, i felt like i bought a different phone because of the total skinning of UI. im also currently using the N-desk and the combination with these two looks really nice.

    Hi There,

I downloaded the Trial Version of the shell from Nokia Ovi for my Nokia 5800 and had a full two days of weekend to tinker around with it and here is my view so far.

1.I LOVE the way you can add & remove the various widgets on my desktop-with the original 5800,I could only have 4 widgets placed on my desktop at any 1 time but with the shell given its 3 different homescreens, only space limits me as to what I can add-I still have plenty of it as I have run out of widgets to add!!!
2.I am very impressed at the animation the shell offers-the couressel is UNBELIEVABLE,the choice of choosing different animation effects like folding, flipping…etc is also great and gives a great visual effect and makes you want to play around with your phone all the time!
3.I am also impressed that the shell came with the Wether app-I have another phone which has this app on its home screen and have always wanted one on my 5800 home screen but with the original 5800 software,I knew it would be impossible as I wont be able to have the app on my desktop all the time-also impressive is its 3 day forecast, wind speed, pressure and that small thermometer is also great-shows that the developers paid so much attention to detail when developing the software.

There are many things I love about this shell but there is 1 or 2 issue I would like to be added (or maybe I haven’t figured out how to configure it)
1.I use my phone mostly to receive my e-mails.With the original 5800 software,I could receive an e-mail and it would show me on my home screen who it is from and its subject-I dont know if the shell offers this functionality and I think it is critical to a comms device-another great addition would be an option to show me my Facebook summery on a widget on my home screen.

All in all, when I downloaded the shell,It was like I had bought a new phone and have no Idea why the guys @ Nokia have not given us something like this!

    Thanks guys!

I’ve installed the SPB shell on to my Nokia N8 yesterday and my wife looked at me, asking: What are you doing? You are smiling in to your phone!
Well, that describes my first impression of the software, a big happy smile. This is how it should be when the phone comes out of the box.

    1. The looks. Wow, this is not important for me but I just love it.
    2. Customization el grande – like a lot.
    3. The weather app, this is almost porn for a nerd like me. Seriously.

    Cheers from Sweden!

  10. Jason on January 23, 2011 at 7:05 pm

    1. There is no lagging while switching between home screen.
    2. The Carsoul Views is just awesome and convenience to use.
    3. The placing of widget on the home screen is much more flexible compared to the default UI of all symbian phone. Not restricted to the grid.
    4. Multiple home screen. Each home screen are well designed. Its a delight to look at each home screen.
    5. A lot of transparency effect which made the whole UI looks more dynamic. :)

  11. Kfear on January 23, 2011 at 7:19 pm

    Hi guys (and girls ;) .. )

First of all SPB Mobile shell is resurrecting the N8 from it’s graveyard
the original N8 UI is boring like an academic lesson of statistics (:
SPB Mobile shell put a smile on my face as I was very disappointed from the original Nokia N8 UI.
so far for my review on the emotional side …

    On the practical side:

    1. The ability to have 10 “desktops” (Advanced + Life style)
five for business (when I’m at work) and five for pleasure (when I’m having a beer)
    2. A weather report on the calendar – Cool feature (or warm)
    3. My Native language (Hebrew) support – WOW !!
    4. International Clock . Hello from Israel
    5. Wireless Manager
    6. Context driven menus
    7. The amazing graphical and practical carousel for the most important menus like , contacts , contacts carousel , call log , phone menu , SBP menu … and more

    Iphone eat my dust ..

  12. Namit Gupta on January 23, 2011 at 7:43 pm

Tried it on my c7, things i wud like to say is :

    1. Awesome effects, haven’t seen any app better than this which shows such gr8 visual appeal.

    2. The homescreen view is really so customisable which i really love about this app.

  13. Christian on January 23, 2011 at 8:03 pm

  15. Pusparaj on January 23, 2011 at 9:07 pm

I really enjoyed the application. The key attractions are:
    1. The amazing animated wall,
    2. The easy and attractive navigation system and
    3. The most importantly, I think, it uses less memory for navigation.

Well as a Sympian user i always had to sacrifice looks so my phone would operate smoothly (Ironically smoothness was also sacrificed )
but lately i ran SPB MOBILE SHELL and well i was skeptical at first “it’ll slow down my phone and bug it” i said only to be proven wrong when it had the smoothest effects(faster than the original S^3 effects and prettier) it felt rather like a missing app than an intruding one, every system function worked perfectly no lagging no weirdness what so ever.

“It’ll have problems with Arabic as most of my contacts names are written in it” i said and again it didn’t disappoint my names were safe and i could use them just the same

“It’s the best app i installed on my N8″ this what i’m now saying in hope that i get the full version
Thanks SPB , Thanks Sympian Dreams.

  21. Tuli on January 24, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Wow, never expected that…I’m blown away!
The SPB Shell and Nokia N8 are a ‘Match Made In Heaven’, simply that!
    1. Multiple home screens(15?)
    2. Carousel
    3. Widget here, widget there, widget widget everywhere…
Now, excuse me I’ve my N8 and SPB Shell to play with :-)

  22. Lars Andersen on January 25, 2011 at 4:45 am

    Hello there!

The SPB shell is a dream!!

Had some issues with working around things in my N8, saw the add for SPB read about it,downloaded it, installing it………… HEUREKA!!

No more issues for me :) )))

Several homescreens, moving the widget around, really love the

    carousel so awesome.

Can’t get my arms down again :) )

BUT!!!! There is so many great things in this shell and I’m far

from discovering it all, but my smile is getting bigger and bigger :) ))

Greets from a happy man in Denmark

  23. Pawel on January 25, 2011 at 2:31 pm

I’ve installed SBP Mobile Shell on my Nokia N8 – first impression was ‘Oh My God’ – this is like a WindowsMobile on my Symbian.
The huge digital clock, additional ready-to-use widgets ( like weather and plane mode switch ) are really handy. Plus, i can add as many other shortcuts as i want and they can be from almost any section of the phone ( configuration/installed apps etc. ).

    Some pros:
    - possibility to add more than 3 desktops,
    - possibility to add as many shortcuts/widgets as i want and need,
    - nice, built-in list of ready-to-use widgets,
    - the looks of the icons and widgets are amazing,
    - outstanding animations when changing between more than 5 screens/desktops,

    cons:
    - found only one – when you change the orientation of the screen from vertical to horizontal, your set of widgets gest mixed and you need to either change the orientation of the phone back or set those widgets again in the correct order.

All in all – SPB Mobile Shell is a perfect and a must-have addon for your Nokia N8 if you want to maximise the phone’s productivity and amaze your friends and colleagues.

If you guys ever need to translate SPB Mobile Shell to polish – e-mail me and i will be more than happy to help :)

    I’d installd the TRIAL…

    Incredibile
    Usefull
Best Symbian “APP” I have ever seen!

Just a little Bug… Widgets in horizontal orientation are overlayed.

Never the less, this is, like I want the new Symbian^3 on my N8!
(for a little bit cheaper.) ;-)

  25. danny on January 27, 2011 at 1:10 pm

i was considering paying to end my contract because my n8 hasnt lived up to my expectations bt when this came along, it reignited my love for the n8. Its quicker, smoother and the visuliasation its just perfect.

  26. Ivan D Great on January 27, 2011 at 7:53 pm

Im going to miss this app, 12 days remaining….
