How to update your Nokia phone’s firmware A Beginners Guide – 1
I have noticed few of my friends are not aware of Nokia Firmware updates , few of them do not know how to update and few think it is a dangerous job .But they are complaining about the bugs frequently .
If you are one them ,definitely this guide will help you to keep a better phone.
Why firmware update is a must:
Phone operating system or phone software is the soul of a phone. After releasing a smart phone with numerous functions ,when it goes to the masses only companies like Nokia able to get user feed backs from all around the world and that will let them to fix the problems that they do not know during the release. The new bugs fixed Operating system is the next OS for your device available via a firmware update .
And the smart phones are very expensive devices so that ,the latest technology features also can be added via a software update without replacing the phone every few months.
By updating the firmware of the phone you will have:

Nokia offers updates in two ways:
1)OTA – Over The Air : Directly from your phone ,by choosing update option ,this will be done via your phone’s Internet connection it can be gprs,edge,3g or even wi-fi which is costless.(available in selected latest S60 V3 and S60 V5 phones )
2)NSU-Nokia Software Updater : You should download and install the Nokia Software updater in your PC ,then connect the phone ,next start the NSU when your PC is online ,it will search the update automatically and install with your permission to the phone
How to update your Nokia s60 V5 device(Xpress Music 5800 used to write this post)Mobile via OTA
(This method is applicable to phones with Symbian Series 60 Feature pack 2 (Eg N96,N78 )also.)
Go to “settings” from the main menu of your phone then choose “phone” now select “Phone Management ” then select “device Updates” or Press *#0000# in the dialpad, it will show you the current firmware version and other info ,click “options” from this menu then choose “Check for Updates”. Now you phone will attempt to connect to the internet ,choose the connection you want to use(Wif fi is the best as it is free)phone will download the firmware if it found new ,then follow the on screen instructions to update.Phone will restart few times and let you the the update status. In Nokia XPress Music 5800 you will not lose any settings or application even after the firmware update.
If the phone takes too much of time to start after update ,remove the battery and put it again(Caution :try this after 10 mins observation only ,don’t do it during the update ,you phone will go bad and mad)
Important Note : Latest Nokia phones like Xpress Music 5800 ,N97 etc has the UDP(User data prevention ) facility it will keep your data unchanged during the installation but if something went wrong ,it is better to have a backup
