Nokia e7 fixed focus cam vs n8 autofocus cam

E7vsN8 cam

Most of you enjoy the N8 in hands, others waiting for the New N8  get delivered to your door step and some of us reading news about Nokia N8 to make a decision . Definitely few of you are waiting for the release of Nokia E7 like me.

But there  is only one big problem I see as an Nokia enthusiast for last few years in the up coming E7. The flagship Nseries N8 got a 12 mega pix auto focus camera while the upcoming E7 have a fixed focus 8 mpx camera.

Mega pixel does not matter ,if you are not going to print big hoarding using your phone. but focussing technology   ,yes, matters. E7 and N8 both has lot of common features as  running  on the same engine as described by Nokia. The same Symbian^3 operating system, same processing power and RAM. But e7 has a physical key board with the touch input.

QWERTY keyboard lovers like me definitely will take advantage of the E7 ,but why it comes with a fixed focus camera?.

What is auto focus and fixed focus.

“Fixed” focus means that you have no control over focus at all. The lens opening is small enough that pretty much everything will be in acceptable focus. This has limitations, though, particularly the requirement for adequate lighting.
“Autofocus” actually changes the focus of the lens, based on the distance of the subject from the camera. There are a few ways that cameras can measure this, such as analyzing the sharpness in a specific target zone or by bouncing light or sound waves or infra red light off of the subject (you might have seen IFR in lot of Sony Cyber Shots).
Fixed focus is generally associated with low cost cameras, including those throw-away cameras you can buy in the drug store.
Actual autofocus is generally associated with more sophisticated cameras, ranging in price from about $100 to thousands of dollars.

While we get ready to celeberate the launch of E7 ,if it carries a cheap type camera ,what does it stand for ? Nokia may be I am wrong ,waiting for a good response from you ! .What do you want to say on this guys ?

FIXED Focus does NOT equal FULL Focus. The C7 has an 8 MegaPixel FULL focus camera using Extended Depth of Field technology (EDoF). This means that everything in the picture will be in focus from about 0.5m to infinity. A FIXED focus camera is much cheaper and much less complex to build because the only objects that are in focus are one’s at a fixed and predefined distance from the lens. The EDoF camera on the C7 has two computerized processing steps; an extra step is necessary given the asymetrical and highly engineering lenses used inside the camera. Calling the C7′s camera fixed focus is misleading and frankly, wrong.

    Hi stoli,

Honor your opinion ,but the point is Nokia’s so called EDof technology phones can take photos only from 50 CM,which is fixed. This limit is not enough to scan documents, and close up photos of faces .

Nokia uses the word EDoF to describe the this sort of fixed focus (fixed from 50 CM !)with lot of technical matters, that is not important to worry ,but the result is to …Since the blogs are very close to users and illustrates the hi technical matters in simple format ,the term fixed focus is more suitable .

You can see the same terms used to describe C7 ,E7 phone cams in reputed sites like GSMareana too.

Due to my profession, I used Nokia N80i ,N95 8GB,Xpress Music 5800,N97 etc during my office hours to scan numerous documents and email to various places.

If the phone does not have a closeup shot within at least 10 CM ,then better to call it fixed focus ,and there is no any moving parts in the EDoF cams, if no moving parts mean there are no focus adjustments to be made logically it is fixed focus cam !

    cheers !
