It’s a quick heads up , the great Opera Mini web browser gets some update this days . Opera Mini 6 was a great mobile web browser ,particularly for Symbian based phones .  Opera Mini 6.5 is the current stable version ,now upgraded to version 6.5.1 with some predictive text input facility ,head over to the change log section here.

Nokia beta labs has released the new Nokia Maps Version 3.08 now. The new version is a major upgrade from the previous version Nokia Maps 3.07.

What’s different from v3.07? (Official Change Log)

Drive Enhancements:

• Live traffic routing takes traffic information into account to avoid traffic jams automatically (available in Germany, France, US, UK and Russia).
• Turn on "Avoid traffic" in your "Route settings" to take traffic conditions into account while you drive. Always get the best route for right now.
• New Drive look & feel – home screen now has buttons for "Set destination," "Drive home" and "Just drive."
• "Just drive" or Drive assistance shows your accurate speed, gives speed warnings, the distance driven and real time traffic.
• New information bar on Drive navigation and Drive assistance screens.
• Also easily toggle between Estimated Time of Arrival in minutes or distance to your destination – just tap the icon on the screen.
• New option menus in Drive.
• Set a contact as a destination.
• Easily change your settings during Drive navigation. Changes in settings are immediate and can been seen instantly.

Additional improvements of Nokia Maps 3.08

• Long tap is now available to give quick access to "Drive to," "Walk to," "Share" and various lists.
• Settings reorganized to "General" "Maps & Walk" and "Drive."

Nokia seems to lose it’s strength in creating good phones this days,but still continue in some innovative solutions like Nokia Maps ,still no other maps are there to over take this !

It is a quick heads up,Nokia has updated the OVI Store client to a new version called 1.10(9). The previous version was 1.09(8). There are no visible changes in the interface of Version 1.10(9). The update is available for all Symbian S60 V3 and S60 V5 based phones.

It is good to update the Ovi Store in your phone in order to enjoy any new enhancements come through the backend .

This post if from a heavy  and Senior User of N97 (Senior=early adopter )

If you are an N97 user like me ,yes this post is specially for you ,for you only !. This is my second year with the ill-fated N97 ,I have come across lot of pain  and little  fun – ever since I started with this device like many of you !

Any how the apps I have ,are almost the best apps surviving with the freaking N97’s hardware . And the apps not using the system resources much . And the apps that don’t make your N97 get stuck. So that, it is worth to have a look ,if you are a new N97 user ! (I have free and paid apps in my N97 ,here I list out the free apps only ) Pleas note that you can download  this applications from OVI Store /Nokia Beta Labs for free.

1)Facebook Application for N97

It is free to download from Facebook ,It offers minimal Facebook experience to you ,Cannot compare it with the Android based Facebook application that offers very rich Facebook experience . Any how it works  on your N97 without sucking .

2)DeviceInfo

Deviceinfo is a small app to know your hardware specs ,status ,connectivity info in a nutshell .I used Device Info application in my earlier days of N97 to find out the memory usage (RAM) and other performance of the hardware . Still it remains silently in my N97 .I use it very rare as now I mastered controlling my N97.(how to make your N97 really faster ? )

3)Accuweather

The famous weather application that comes preinstalled in N97 . It is just nice to check the weather of your area or any part of the world. Sleek and fast.

4)Foursquare

Just installed Foursquare to find out ,what  the famous Foursquare application is  !,Good idea Great success it is .But I am unable to use it properly here in Sri Lanka ,as it is one of the ill fated countries to miss the digital map.

5)Google Reader

Just use this reader to read all of your RSS feeds. But nowadays I don’t use it much as Gravity offers better viewing experience of RSS feeds .(visit http://m.google.com in your phone’s default browser and download Google reader for free)

6)Blue Lagoon Clock

Just for viewing pleasure ,you can get a time widget on your home screen . with big bright digital clock .I almost forget to to open this app nowadays !.

7)WiDropBox

If you have Dropbox account ,and you would like to access it from your phone it is just a basic and simple application .(Read my previous article about WiDropbox if you are new to this )

8)QIK

You can telecast (live video streaming from your Nokia N97 )anything with this app and a free account on Qik.com .It works like charm always but the transfer speed is vary .

9)CNN Video

Get the top ten CNN new videos every day . This app is very smooth. Videos are high in quality ,downloads faster than the mobile YouTube apps.

10)N97 Compass

Just to explore the capabilities of your N97’s inbuilt digital compass. This app helps you to find the directions if you missed in a jungle (Hope you have never done )

11)Joikuspot

It is preinstalled on  N97 – Joikuspot helps to share your phone’s 3G or any internet connection via the inbuilt Wi-Fi antenna .Your phone functions like Wi-Fi hot spot.

12)Voice Recorder

It is a small and sleek application to record voice in your Nokia N97. Voice Recorder is from Offscreen Technologies (Read my previous post about the Voice Recorder App here )

13)Google’s Gmail Client

It is  one of the award winning  software to  use your Gmail accounts in your Symbian Phone.
Works fine ,no any crashes with my N97 ever since I started to use.

14)Sports Tracker

The GPS enabled health software .I love Nokia’s Sports Tracker application  like lots of you . I use this app to track my journeys other than track  the number of calories I lost . You can find lot of posts and download links of Sports Tracker by Searching   it here in Symbiandreams.com .

15)Nimbuzz

The multi instant message client . Nimuzz helps you to chat using all of your chat IDs from Yahoo,google, hotmail etc… I have some issues with Nimuzz ,it re connects frequently .Any how It is a good stuff.

16)Fring For Symbian

Fring is my favorite Multie Instant Messaging client. Fring has more features like face to face video calls . And the interesting part of Fring is the ability to work in minimal data speeds (on poor GPRS connections too )-You have to disable the auto starting feature of Fring ,to make your N97 boot faster .

17)Google Maps

Since OVI Maps are not available for my region ,I use Google Maps. I use the satellite view of Google Maps to find the rough estimations and directions .

18)Nokia Photo Browser

I hope all of you are much aware about this nice app from Nokia . But it struggles to load photos ,if your collection is more than 2000 like mine.

19)Nokia Battery Monitor

(On above screen shot you can see the real battery level shown by Nokia Battery Monitor home screen widget and the false battery level reported by typical battery indicator )Even it is new ,it is the app I use in my daily life to monitor the battery level of My N97. Almost it predicts everything perfectly .You can read further about  Nokia Battery Monitor here .

The leading Chinese security software company NetQin is on   top of the controversy.  It has been reported that ,NetQin covertly  installs a malware via it’s Virus Guard software and charges the user a fee of 2RMB (US$0.30)to remove it . The news first came from the China’s state TV. Follow ups have been made by all the famous Tech blogs like CNet,ZDNET etc.

Even though NetQin has refused this claims today via a reply  sent to Techcrunch ,The software from NetQin is banned from China’s three leading mobile phone service provider’s app stores .Interestingly Nokia too withdrew their support for the NetQin software even most of the Nokia’s Chinese versions are  being used with NetQin software .

NetQin’s reply on this issue sent to the Techcrunch is quoted here : .

“NetQin Mobile Inc. has strong ethical standards and abides by all applicable industry rules and regulations. The allegations waged against us are entirely false.

NetQin stands behind the quality of all its products and we are diligent in our work to ensure that all NetQin mobile apps are safe and secure. In fact, we welcome any independent 3rd party to evaluate and audit our products, as we are confident they will be found to be safe, secure and of high quality.”

Recently ,.I have written a  post about the best part of the NetQin’s Mobile Guard software and still using it in my phone. Thank god ,I did not install the Antivirus software in my phone from NetQin’s Apps menu . Guys you are still safe if  you did not install the NetQin’s Antivirus software and you are not in China ,I guess.

I am new to Dropbox ,a free online storage of 2 GB(pay for increased storage )and  came to know that lot of people are crazy about using the Dropbox application . I just spent two days with Widropbox  in my N97 and it is decent enough to perfrom what you want. Widropbox is found in OVI store ,it is a widget and free for download . Widropbox allows you to perform most of the needed functions with your Dropbox account.

You can create folders ,delete or rename the files,download the files directly to the  phone and view them.Even it allow you to modify the settings of your Dropbox account. Dropbox is very famous among the Android users ,the number of apps available in the Android Market show that !

The app tags or marks the scenes of your video ,while you record , when you play back the video in your Nokia device ,now you can simply  move around by pressing the scenes directly ,watch the video bellow !

Nokia rolled out a new version of OVI Store  on all Symbian platforms. The new version released for Symbian^3 is Version 2.06.0004 and update for the Symbian S60 V5 and V3s is Version 1.09(8).

It is just a quick heads up ,that the famous push email software Mobile Documents got a minor update via Nokia Beta labs today.The new version 0.9.21 is released followed by the major update version 0.9.20 which brought lot of new features and fixes .

Mobile Document supports all famous Symbian platforms (excluding S40) including S^3.

• How to get more memory in my phone using Mobile Guard ?

Just go to OS Scan from the menu and you will be automatically notified about the Memory Overused .

Choose the ways you want to clear the memory as per Mobile Guard’s suggestions .

• Clean the System Cache [I used to get more than 2 MB files as System cache some times,one I cleared my C: drive becomes more spacious ]
• Stop the Applications and process running in  the background[Advanced users : If you know that the process is not needed you can close it ,any way nothing will go wrong ,you may have to restart the phone in some cases )

• Data Use Counter[Web Manager/Monitor]

This is one of the nice features of Mobile Guard.People who have a limited data plan get advantages over this. If you have activated this feature in the mobile guard then it will give a on screen notification every time you use the internet on your phone ,the amount of the data and the amount you can go for a month(you have to set it)When you reach the monthly limit ,your data connection will not work until you do changes in the settings.

You can see the data use log very clearly ,that states which program uses internet and how much data for a period .

Mobile Guard is a feature rich product that has a lot of uses ,but I have given priority to the features that can make a Symbian phone run more smoother and faster here .
