Samsung Galaxy S II- Pros and Cons

Well I am moving from My Nokia N97 to the new Samsung Galaxy SII ,there are several reasons for the move ,follow me for coming days and let us share the thoughts here.

I’ve got my new Samsung Galaxy S II  –I9100 directly from UK last week. As usual I start here to share my personal experience with the new Samsung Galaxy S II . This small post gives the plus ++ of the Galaxy S II,my upcoming posts will reveal more .

Positive side / Pros of the Galaxy S II

Why I am happy about using Samsung Galaxy S II

• Screens display Quality is superb – bright with vibrant real colors
• Thanks for gorilla glass -that does pretty good job, protecting my phone from the dangerous coins and keys of my pocket .
• The 4.3" Screen size is good enough for games and watching movies
• Web browsing is much better now,I like the easy book mark feature there(Simply you can forget Samsung Galaxy Tab 7” Tablet )
• Love the camera’s features like touch focus and pinch to zoom ,really work fine
• Wall papers are cool, nice animated ones
• Android – Gingrbread gives you more control on your phone like one tap management of the sensors,GPS,Wi-Fi connectivity ,Screen Brightness etc.
• Light weight(119 g)- You don’t feel like carrying it !
• Call quality is good
• Love the video (1080p@30fps ) quality and the image quality (8 MP, 3264×2448 pixels, autofocus, LED flash)
• Phone is running in  top speed as it has dual-core ARM Cortex A9 1.2 GHz processor  and 1 GB of RAM ,you will experience extremely fast operations all the time

This post if from a heavy  and Senior User of N97 (Senior=early adopter )

If you are an N97 user like me ,yes this post is specially for you ,for you only !. This is my second year with the ill-fated N97 ,I have come across lot of pain  and little  fun – ever since I started with this device like many of you !

Any how the apps I have ,are almost the best apps surviving with the freaking N97’s hardware . And the apps not using the system resources much . And the apps that don’t make your N97 get stuck. So that, it is worth to have a look ,if you are a new N97 user ! (I have free and paid apps in my N97 ,here I list out the free apps only ) Pleas note that you can download  this applications from OVI Store /Nokia Beta Labs for free.

1)Facebook Application for N97

It is free to download from Facebook ,It offers minimal Facebook experience to you ,Cannot compare it with the Android based Facebook application that offers very rich Facebook experience . Any how it works  on your N97 without sucking .

2)DeviceInfo

Deviceinfo is a small app to know your hardware specs ,status ,connectivity info in a nutshell .I used Device Info application in my earlier days of N97 to find out the memory usage (RAM) and other performance of the hardware . Still it remains silently in my N97 .I use it very rare as now I mastered controlling my N97.(how to make your N97 really faster ? )

3)Accuweather

The famous weather application that comes preinstalled in N97 . It is just nice to check the weather of your area or any part of the world. Sleek and fast.

4)Foursquare

Just installed Foursquare to find out ,what  the famous Foursquare application is  !,Good idea Great success it is .But I am unable to use it properly here in Sri Lanka ,as it is one of the ill fated countries to miss the digital map.

5)Google Reader

Just use this reader to read all of your RSS feeds. But nowadays I don’t use it much as Gravity offers better viewing experience of RSS feeds .(visit http://m.google.com in your phone’s default browser and download Google reader for free)

6)Blue Lagoon Clock

Just for viewing pleasure ,you can get a time widget on your home screen . with big bright digital clock .I almost forget to to open this app nowadays !.

7)WiDropBox

If you have Dropbox account ,and you would like to access it from your phone it is just a basic and simple application .(Read my previous article about WiDropbox if you are new to this )

8)QIK

You can telecast (live video streaming from your Nokia N97 )anything with this app and a free account on Qik.com .It works like charm always but the transfer speed is vary .

9)CNN Video

Get the top ten CNN new videos every day . This app is very smooth. Videos are high in quality ,downloads faster than the mobile YouTube apps.

10)N97 Compass

Just to explore the capabilities of your N97’s inbuilt digital compass. This app helps you to find the directions if you missed in a jungle (Hope you have never done )

11)Joikuspot

It is preinstalled on  N97 – Joikuspot helps to share your phone’s 3G or any internet connection via the inbuilt Wi-Fi antenna .Your phone functions like Wi-Fi hot spot.

12)Voice Recorder

It is a small and sleek application to record voice in your Nokia N97. Voice Recorder is from Offscreen Technologies (Read my previous post about the Voice Recorder App here )

13)Google’s Gmail Client

It is  one of the award winning  software to  use your Gmail accounts in your Symbian Phone.
Works fine ,no any crashes with my N97 ever since I started to use.

14)Sports Tracker

The GPS enabled health software .I love Nokia’s Sports Tracker application  like lots of you . I use this app to track my journeys other than track  the number of calories I lost . You can find lot of posts and download links of Sports Tracker by Searching   it here in Symbiandreams.com .

15)Nimbuzz

The multi instant message client . Nimuzz helps you to chat using all of your chat IDs from Yahoo,google, hotmail etc… I have some issues with Nimuzz ,it re connects frequently .Any how It is a good stuff.

16)Fring For Symbian

Fring is my favorite Multie Instant Messaging client. Fring has more features like face to face video calls . And the interesting part of Fring is the ability to work in minimal data speeds (on poor GPRS connections too )-You have to disable the auto starting feature of Fring ,to make your N97 boot faster .

17)Google Maps

Since OVI Maps are not available for my region ,I use Google Maps. I use the satellite view of Google Maps to find the rough estimations and directions .

18)Nokia Photo Browser

I hope all of you are much aware about this nice app from Nokia . But it struggles to load photos ,if your collection is more than 2000 like mine.

19)Nokia Battery Monitor

(On above screen shot you can see the real battery level shown by Nokia Battery Monitor home screen widget and the false battery level reported by typical battery indicator )Even it is new ,it is the app I use in my daily life to monitor the battery level of My N97. Almost it predicts everything perfectly .You can read further about  Nokia Battery Monitor here .

As a quick head up ,I have posted the Firmware update PR 1.1 for C7 yesterday and predicted the availability for the other devices . Thanks to Nokia to made our news true !. Nokia Officially announced the availability of the Firmware PR1.1 to N8,C6-01 today.

The standard, non-customised version of the software is available from today. Country (SIM-free) and operator-specific variants will follow soon.-Nokia

Nokia is busy on putting the firmware on it’s servers worldwide ,and we have a time to see what is new in this new firmware update .

Changelog of Nokia N8,C6-01and C7 Firmware PR 1.1

Most of the updated features are not directly visible to end users, but together, they will enhance the user experience of each Symbian device. Both the quality and the stability of the devices will be further enhanced. In addition to numerous tweaks and fixes, there’s also some new content.

1. Meeting requests can be accepted directly from email invitations;
2. Maps integration in email, which means people can view the meeting location on the map when the address is mentioned in the location field in the invite.
3. For Nokia N8 users:
   a. New Quick Office 6.4 editor version, which offers editing possibilities and allows zooming in & out in Word documents.
   b. Three high quality games will also be preloaded on new devices – Need for Speed Shift, Real Golf and Galaxy on Fire. (In some countries, Need for Speed is replaced with Asphalt 5). For current N8 users, these are available for free from Ovi Suite & Ovi Store.

You’ll be able get the update through Software Update on your device or using Ovi Suite. We’re warned that the update may be quite a large download, especially for Nokia N8 users. I got few moments to play with Nokia X3-02 the touch and type device ,Here you can see some sample photos taken by Nokia X3-02’s 5 Mega Pixel camera.

Yes ,it is my hand  ! taken roughly from 50 CM  (just click to see the original size in the my Flickr account.)[I am not sure that X3-02 got an EDoF camera or Fixed Focus Camera ]

This is about 10 CM distance from the X3-02 Camera . Don’t expect a much more image quality form a budget phone folks !

Do you see the tiny dots,the earlier day 1 MP cams had . This shots taken during my office hours ,in a room with windows to permit daylight .

It is enough to have a casual shot !

 X3-02 is a touch and type device runs on Symbian S40 Operating System.  Have a 2.4 inch screen ; 3G, Bluetooth,Wi-Fi connectivity ,FM radio ,and all packed in a  slim sexy body .

Nokia Beta Labs has released the new beta version of the Nokia Email(Nokia Email 3.05.) for S60 devices recently

If you own phones like Nokia E72, Nokia E73 etc (  Symbian Series 60 Version 3 FP2 phone) definitely you can be happy about the new Email Software from Nokia ,that means Nokia doesn’t forget you ,at all.

The new beta version of Nokia Email 3.05 intends to offer better email experience for the following Nokia devices  as per Nokia.

Nokia E72, Nokia E73, Nokia E52, Nokia E5-00, or Nokia C5

NOTE! This update to the Nokia Email client is intended for anyone with a Nokia E72, Nokia E73, Nokia E52, Nokia E5-00, or Nokia C5 and who:

• Has had serious problems using the Nokia Email client earlier OR
• Wants to try out the new features, like direct HTML view and encryption support (see more below)

We hope that this preview helps to solve some of the issues some consumers have encountered and give you a chance to give feedback to the new features.  The official release of this client will come later via Nokia Software Updater-Nokia Beta Labs

Here  is a collection  of some known issues/bugs caused by the Nokia E72’s new firmware Version 052.005 and Solutions[Thanks for the Readers of Symbiandreams and Nokia Support Forum ]

1. No SMS notification or no blinking light in E72 after upgrade of Version 052.005

Solution :

It is due to a big number of SMSes stored in your E72,just delete the SMS s and make the inbox to bellow 100 messages . Now you will get the SMS notification as normal .

Advanced method 1): if it is not worked , delete the messages from the memory card then remove the memory card ,remove the battery keep the phone switch off for 1-2 hours and try again ]/

Advanced method 2): Change the profile settings for sms notification ,vibrating alerts and restart the phone ,that helps in some cases

2.  How to Solve this (SMS notification )problem in Nokia E72 without deleting my messages

Solution :

1) Go to your messages. Next, go into the “my folders” folder. *Create a new folder, name it whatever you want.

2) You can simply select all your messages in your inbox (hover over a message, go to “that options > Mark/Unmark > Mark all)

3) Once all messages have been selected, move all your messages into your new folder. (hover over message, go to “options” > Move to folder  *select folder you just created

All your messages should transfer into this folder so you can still access them. This should fix your problem without deleting your messages.

Inbuilt Spam filter ,filters the unwanted sms ,but I cannot test this features as I dont get such bulk SMS,just try and let me know friends !

You have the full control of the Threadsms UI ,as you can change the skin ,UI background,font size etc.

• Reply ,forward,delete works with a tap

Just tap the received SMS conversation ,you will get a reply box ,where type the text and send ,really it is cool.

• Number of emotions / Smileys to choose

You can simply insert smileys when you compose text messages from ThreadSMS pro.If your friend’s phone have ThreadSMS too ,no issues in seeing the same smiley there .

• Save your message as Note or separate text document

Just pressing one option you can save the selected SMS as a notepad document . Later you can see the text file in your office folder as one of your notes .

• Opens the web links from your text message –Go to web sites

When you receive SMS with links ,by tapping on the link you can directly go to the web browser and surf or just click “copy to clipboard” from the options ,for later use.

• Compose MMS ,SMS with ease

ThreadSMS has tons of features with the new version 1.97. Still I am exploring the features and I cannot find anything negative while I test in my Nokia N97  ,if I find anything very useful to share this review will be updated.

Is this an E7’s good  close up shot for you ?

Nokia has released the Battery Monitor version 1.1 recently .

But in most cases you cannot get the download link active inside the OVI store (what happened to me in N97)if you already have the previous version of Nokia Battery Monitor .

An uninstallation  of the Nokia Battery monitor also will not help as still some files  remain in your phone.

In order to upgrade from your previous version of battery monitor to this new version you have to follow this steps .(For the first time installation ,you can get simply from OVI store ,this tips for those who upgrade  to version 1.1 )

Memory Bars is an fantastic application ,that runs in any Symbian phone(S50 V5,S^3 etc ) that supports home screen widgets .Like million of other N97 users I too suffer by the Lack of memory of my N97 darling. If you know that what application consumes more memory ,you can simply ignore it . A manual memory management is possible by knowing the programs that runs in the background .

Advantage of Running Free Memory Bars App in your phone –Specially in N97/N97 mini – “it is not a Task Manager Application “

Task Manager apps are different from Memory Bars app . Memory Bars runs on your home screen and tells the available RAM space. When you launch an application see the Memory Bars ,you will see the the reduced amount of the RAM space ,now you can judge ,the amount of memory the program consumed .Now launch other apps consequently you want to have ,the Memory Bars tells how much every program takes from RAM.
