My good friend and Symbiandreams previous co-editor Jade Bryan has written an interesting guide on Symbianworld.org “ How To Take Macro Shots on Full Focus Camera” recently and got some applause all around the corners. Congrats on the best post of the days.

Happy to see him like this ,but want to ask him back “ Hey Jade do you want me to carry a Magnifying Glass all the time with my Nokia phone?”

The tips Jade offered is simple and innovative ,of course !

Go to your stationary shop

Buy a Magnifying Glass of your choice

Fix it with your Extended Full Focus Camera’s lens

Put a rubber band to make sure ,it will not fall down

Take the close up shots, yes it is better now

Nokia E7 and Fix Focused Camera

Nokia is offering Fixed Focus cameras with some Hi-End phones like E7 currently ,that is a definite disadvantage for people like us(We miss the document scanning function etc.)I don’t have any issues on Fixed Focus Cams on mid range phones .

I have had enough explanations and arguments about this E7 camera issues in Symbiandreams.com(as I love to have such a great phone with the AF cam too) ,if anyone out there with the same opinion please post your comments (opponents also welcome )

Skype for Symbian got a major update now. The new Skype version 1.50-12 adds support for Symbian^3 phones like C7,N8,C6-01 and E7 too.

The new Skype for Symbian brings lots of UI improvements and faster performance. The new technology (codec)called SILK used in this version lets you have calls with more clarity .

“ Our codec, called SILK, was designed to capture the true richness of human speech, and to work really well on the Internet, where Internet speeds vary. Think of the telephone network as being like a standard-definition television, and SILK being like a high-definition television. The difference is striking. Once you’ve tried it, it’s hard to go back – just like HDTV. In fact, we thought that SILK was so awesome, we contributed it to the community. We’ve made our code open source, and have brought SILK forward for standardization by international standards bodies ”.Skype

New features/improvements on Skype for Symbian Ver.1.5

Profile picture can be changed /directly take a photo from your phone and add

UI Optimized for bigger screens

Easy to set mood messages /Status message

Icons are big enough to see and tap

Most of us like to browse the OVI Store on the PC for the convenient of using the large screen and keyboard .But you cannot download the application to the PC if you want to have it in your mobile. Ovi Store allows you to send the link to your mobile from the web site and download in your mobile.

If you have the option to download the Application directly to your PC and transfer later to your mobile ,that would be something convenient . Nokia does not like this any way ,as the chances of tracking the application downloads go low for them.

Here I show you that how to download the Applications from the OVI Store directly into your PC .Please note that this applies only for Free Applications ,not for paid ones.

1) Just go to OVI Store in your PC’s browser by entering this address : http://store.ovi.com

2) Now Sign in to your OVI Store account using your user name and password [If you don’t have one just get it from here ]

3) Just Click on the Free Application you want to download

N97 is a multimedia power house with Symbian S60 V5 touch UI. Like many of others I too passed blame on Nokia N97 for it’s performance ,when I was new for it. Once I lived a full life with it ,I found the ways to make it perfect always.

Nokia N97 is blamed for it’s speed and the frequency of getting stuck. But ,it all depends on how we use the device . Here are some simple tips ,I have learned by using the Nokia N97 over 9 months.I ignored the regular tips of making phone fast and only mention about my personal experience here .

If nothing is working for you let me know ,I may help you through an online chat.

How My Nokia N97 Became Faster ?

(If your N97 is getting stuck frequently and running slow, try to do one or all of this )

1)Throw away the bulky applications :uninstall all un used applications.you can see the applications running in the background using the menu key(long press)but please note that some applications are running as system services and not visible in the task manager.such applications also consumes your ram and makes your phone run slow.(some reminder apps ,drivers etc)

2)Reset the phone(As last try reinsall the OS)The useual first thing you should do is a hard reset. but few points you have to keep in mind to understand why it is always not successful.if you have some applications installed in your memory card, when the phone is restarting after the reset, the app will be reinstalled. As the reset deletes apps from the phone memory only.so if the app that makes your phone slow or get stucks installed in the memory card, you are in the trap again now.

4)Be careful with themes – most of the themes from third parties makes the phone extremely slow, for optimum result use only the original theme came with your phone. Always install themes in the phone memory ,not in the memory card. (before you give up your device check all this )

5)Keep the phone switch off - the best way I have learnt is giving a long rest .yes it is hard to do(may be hard to believe too) ,but it made my n97 became faster.switch off your phone and remove the battery keep it for minimum 24 hrs.I guess this process clears the auto loaded apps from the ram of the system and may make some parts become cool !

6) Optimize Home Screen Widgets – some home screen widgets can consume more memory ,so better to keep small widgets and offline widgets like short cuts, calendar ,favourite contacts.

7)Keep the phone charged always: yes it is very important, I have experienced this personally and realized very late. If your battery is about to die and you switch off the Nokia N97 ,when you restart the phone ,perhaps your system will be crashed. Charging the battery again in the off mode also would be impossible at this time(in rare cases ,but I have gone through all…such a hardcore N97 user)N97 will keep restarting ,the only solution is doing a hard reset. So charge your N97 every day and keep the battery indicator always above 60%.

If I miss anything that you have observed please feel free to share …

Panorama mode enables you to capture multiple scenes and after it captured the different scenes (images) then the phone will stitch all scenes that were captured and turns your images into a single 360° angle view image or on a panorama view.

Using the panorama mode is just easy as using the camera because all throughout the shoot you will be guided by the panorama bar so that there will be a correct alignment for your scenes. On the camera application you will just switch your image/video mode to panorama mode and then you can directly start your panoramic shot experience.

*Tip: Don’t move the phone until the image was been captured and the panorama guide bar will just give you a green arrow if it’s time to move the phone. Be still and follow the green arrows to navigate a correct alignments of scenes.

Last month I was able to trial the Nokia N86 8MP together with this bluetooth headset, naming it as the Nokia BH-214. And from the bucket of my YouTube videos I scooped this one to share to you on how the BH-214 was unboxed, compared, and paired with my Nokia N97 Mini (bottom).

This BH-214 is a lightweight handsfree headset which you can clip it with you and give a wireless connection from the headset itself to your phone. It has a standard 3.5mm jack for your headphones, led lights indicator, physical keys for music & calls, and lastly the battery can last up to 7 hours for music playback.

All in all the BH-214 have the salient features of a dream headset which is very compact and light, comfortable to clip anywhere, and have a radiant design for hooking any eyes.

The BH-214 uses bluetooth connection and this is for sure applicable to phones with Bluetooth enable.

Set aside those hundred-pages-book for your photography guides and tips because I will share to you a simple yet effective tips on capturing artistic and with expert styles photos from your Nokia phones. Never mind those tissues you will prepare because I’m sure there will be no NOSEBLEEDING that will happen here.

Be amaze with your phone’s half-hidden abilities. And for sure, your inhabited camera features on your phone will be unravel as we will go deeper on its sensor chips, urgh! I said no nosebleed. First and foremost I recommend to open your camera application now or start sliding the camera lens cover of your phones. Then we will now go the next brain-draining-steps of this article! Just kidding again! Hahah.

If you really like to capture great photos with those artistry you have learned for the past years, I’m sure you cannot complete it without any devices to use to showoff your abilities. If you are patient enough to follow this blog for the past weeks or months then you were able to saw some of the photos I’ve taken so far with Nokia N86, Nokia N97 Mini, Nokia N73 and now for my Nokia N97 Classic
. That’s not all I also have this 365 Photo Project for month of January and February.

Now let’s start to digest the few steps.

*This guide will be focusing on Macro/Close Up modes, Flash, and configuring the favorable and best suited camera settings.

Important matters to swallow, just like taking your bitter medicine tablets when you were a child.

Always don’t depend on your Automatic mode of your camera settings if you will capture images on macro, portraits, landscape or anything that goes with arts.

Be familiar with the basics of camera specs. I reserved some special link here to help you understand aperture, focal length, shutter speed, etc. from Symbian-Freak Forum by @lifenexus.

Define your own personal Scene Modes. Tweak or Edit your own personal scene mode and don’t hesitate to try it now. Basing on my setup, I made it to Macro>Vivid>Cloudy>Medium ISO>Flash Off and the rest are normal. I made this because I am always taking small objects, our place is always cloudy, and I love taking nature’s finest living things. Thanks to @Binku for helping me out about my previous post about N86 and N97 camera comparison.

Try all camera features and tweak all settings, it is like try & try until you find something nice. For example on the Nokia N86 8MP and its Sequence Mode shot is very useful when you want to compile photos for a time lapse video. And I had already made one while capturing the sunrise. This will apply also for grid, self-timer, etc.

Flash and Exposure are the remedy for night shots but you need to setup the best configurations of these two. Vivid versus Normal and we will tackle this with sample shots below on this article.

Timings are mostly needed but for me you will need luck most.

And now let’s begin to masticate these samples I’ve got.

Flash and Exposure
Talking about flash here, and most phones have LED/DLED flash that are not bright as Xenon nor smarter than it except in video shoot. So use the flash wisely, put the exact distance from your phone to the subject. Sometimes it also depends on the subject if it can reflect or disperse the flash made.

Another useful feature is the Exposure and this will be better to configure if you don’t want to move your distance, like if you will use flash but you are near on the object then you can lower the exposure. If you lower the exposure for sure it will give you a darker photos as it will manipulate the light depending on your setup. The higher the exposure the higher the light will be expose.Take a look at these images taken with Nokia N97 Classic:

In contrast, more exposure more light so use the exposure level wisely. For the flash, just adjust your distance instead.

Automatic vs Cloudy

In the White Balance settings of your phone, you have there the Close Up, Automatic, Sunny etc. but here I will show you how useful a Cloudy mode is, taken by Nokia N97 Classic.

You could see that the Automatic mode gives a bluish photo while the cloudy mode gave a better color. But sometimes it really depends on your current location on how you manage the settings. *Note that Cloudy setup can give a higher temperature effects on photos when the scene is not suitable for the setup.

Vivid vs Normal

Shot by Nokia N86 8MP. Obviously the Vivid color tone will give a more aesthetic effects on the photo but this is not applicable always because during night time or in the dark area, vivid shots are very useful as it will give a more precise color. While on the Normal of the color tone, you will get more real colors during day time or with abundance of light. It only means that if the camera have good adjustments on the elements of the scenes it is better to stay on the Normal shots.

Sharpness and Contrast
This is my favorite tips for you, the sharpness and contrast usefulness. Who said these two features are useless? This tweaking will help you a lot to capture artistic photos. Even the objects you consider useless will be turn to glamorous one. Take a look at my shots witj N97 Classic.

Here’s another manipulation of Sharpness and Contrast. From trash to sash photos.

>>>

Shoot Like A Pro
These tips and guides are not enough so I recommend that you practice then make things perfect ;D. Just give a few couple of minutes of tweaking the settings in every scenes you will capture, I’m sure that you will be amazed how useful your camera settings are. The important thing is how you use or setup your camera settings beacause they were made for you to explore and not for you to stare only, so, GoodLuck!

Here are the best macro shots I’d shot with a personalized setup…

Overview.
This article will give you the basic steps to make your N97/N97 Mini’s galleries more decent and organize. If you hate your gallery because it’s messy, and if you want to make it accomodating for others and for your selves then maybe it’s time to tweaks some multimedia features on your phone. Exactly we will focus on manipulating the tags on your photos. I’m sure this is also applicable to some Nokia devices as well as other Symbian devices, likely, the Symbian^1.

Highlights.
These are the easy steps and I have included a video below.

You can basically tags photos directly right from your Captured, Albums, Months, and Downloads sections in your gallery.

In the gallery of your captured photos you can either select 1 photo or multiple photos. Note* You can also tag videos but it won’t be played during the slide show.

Selecting multiple photos either single photo is applicable. Just tap the check button for multiple selections then proceed on adding the tag by tapping the options.

Create new tags or select multiple tags from the previous one that you’ve created.

After tagging photos, you can directly view your tags in the Tags section where you will see all tag names that you’ve created. The greater the number of media files that have a particular, the larger the tag name is. There are options available for you to manipulate or change the way the the tags appear.

Name – view tagged files by alphabetical order.

Popularity – view tagged files with the most used one first.

Rename – renaming the tags.

Slide Show – playing media files per tag. Slightly tap on any tags you want to play in the slide show. You can also edit the settings of your slide show by adding a specific song on the slide show or setup your own settings.

6. Now if you want to organize media files on that particular tag, you can do it on your tag section (hard tap on a tag). Then you will be able to see only those media files that belongs to that tag and feel free to share, edit, and organize again your media files.
