How to check your version on get the latest on your Nokia E 72 ?

1. Dial *#0000# from your home screen
2. Now select “Check for update from your options –Menu
3. Phone connects to the Nokia server and tell you the availability of the update ,just opt to  update
4. Warning : always have a data backup of your phone before the update

Nokia has started shipping the new devices Nokia E6 and Nokia X7 on 31st of May 2011.

Nokia  E6 will be shipped to most of the markets around the world while the Nokia X7  exempted from the African and middle east markets in the initial stage of shipping due to market trends .This two new devices will  increase the numbers of Nokia’s Smartphone portfolio.

It is interesting to read new fresh ideas ,specially when it comes from users of the mobiles !

“I own a Nokia C7. I think the camera performs well in most situations. however it is no good for photographing at close range. I agree that this is sometimes necessary. Since installing a AF camera may be to expensive and might be too bulky I think the only solution I can think of is to install two fixed focus cameras: one for close by (5 – 100 cm) and one for further away). The user should be able to switch between normal and macro mode via a hardware switch. This might still be less expensive than installing one AF camera and you also will not be confronted with protruding lenses. For phones like the E7 this solution may be the ideal compromise.” MW

I have been complaining about the use of  EDoF Camera modules in Nokia’s Hi-End phone’s for long time. EDof camera is mostly like a Fixed Focus camera ,Quality is poor in most conditions . But Nokia seems to use the EDoF camera in it’s lot of new phone models including the upcoming Nokia-Windows Phone.

Nokia may have their own reasons to use the EDof camera modules like.. :

1)EDoF cam is cheaper than Autofocus cameras

2)Most of the users (Who are big in numbers –over 90%)do not aware about the differences of this types of camera technologies .

3)EDoF cam allows them to make the phone more slimmer .

But ,when we go for a very Hi-End phone with a big hardware specs ,loosing a good camera is not acceptable and reasonable .Ie : the use of very cheap EDoF camera in Nokia E7.

There may be  some reasons you may want to go for an EDoF equipped camera phone from Nokia . The technology Guru Steve Litchfield has written another interesting  article about the EDoF and Autofocus Cams at Allaboutsymbian.com . I am a big fan of his writings .

Nokia announced two more new devices today via their press release and online events web site. Nokia E6.00 and the X7 are now official . We have had a sneak peak of the Nokia X7 already here.The interesting thing here to note is ,the new code name for the UI this phones have –Symbian Anna .

It’s a quick heads up ,the goldie Nokia E72 have received new firmware last couple of days ago. The new version is V.54.005.

How to update E72 for the new firmware V54 ?

The new firmware is available via OTA [over the air ] it is small as 1 MB .But the size of the update can be vary depends on the region (Language packs ,etc..)

To get this software just click on the Menu button, then > Settings > Phone > Phone Management > Device updates > Select Options > Check for updates and follow the on-screen instructions.

Changelog of E72 Firmware V.54.005 – April 2011

• Firstly it is a performance and stability update
• SIM Lock 3.0 and B2B Certificate, phase 1 added
• Startup settings baseline updated (wk47, 2010) (new dates etc.)
• User settings baseline updates
• After a hard reset or on first use, Camera shortcut is replaced with Ovi Store shortcut in the Home screen
• Removal of Ovi Files (since this service is now outdated)
• Vlingo application removed  

As usual the E72’s firmware update is not immediately available to all regions ,you may have to wait for some time . If you have updated your Nokia E72 and have noticed some interesting changes ,please let us know !

It’s a very short and important note to all Nokia E-7 owners. If you wanna reset your E7 ,the short code *#7370# works fine. But it  doesn’t function  like  in other Symbian S60 devices ,Just give you one warning , even not asking for a pass code ,if you say “yes” it will wipe out everything from all of your drives including C: and the memory card (usually E:)[most of the other S60 Nokia phones preserve the data from E: and only wipes the c: drive in case of hard resetting )

If you are person like me fiddling with your phones always ,be careful .You will loss all of you photos ,stored videos etc from E drive too. You have to do everything from scratch then. Hard resetting your Nokia E7 by entering the code *#7370# should be the very last option .

As a quick heads up ,guys this is not the same PR 1.1 other Symbian^3 devices like N8,C6-01,C7 got earlier.The new firmware version 14.002 offers some performance boost to the E7.

The new E7 firmware PR1.1 is available via Software Update application of your E7(just open the SW Update app and check for the updates ). If you have set up the automatic update feature on ,then phone will prompt for a software update ,say yes and let the phone update itself.

If you are reading Symbiandreams.com for quite sometime ,then you might have seen myself screaming about Nokia E7’s Fixed Focus cam in few posts. Now Steve Litchfield at AAS posted some shots of documents taken from 15 inches distance and some other various close up options.That clearly proves ,E7 is not a choice of Professionals as it is lacking the document scanning feature ,that lot people used to do before by other Nokia phones.

Above photo is taken from 15” distance from the object(A4 document)and the clarity is very very bad. Then Steve tried to take from different distances like 7", 12", 15", 24".(See the images bellow – From top-left, clockwise)but could not succeed to get a scanned like image.Listen the conclusion of Nokia E7 from Steve Litchfield “In short, you want a thin QWERTY smartphone? You have to let accurate document scanning go”

Nokia E7 is a sleek and slim slide out QWERTY phone on a smooth Symbian^3 OS,no doubt. But the camera is useless and a total mess from my point of view. Read out previous posts to get why I am pissed off by Nokia’s decision to implement the cheap EDoF cam on a darling device like this:
